2027 Call for Abstracts

NHWC 16th Biennial Training Conference & Exposition

What is your role in the flood warning community?  The Call for Abstracts for the 2027 NHWC Conference is now open through October 31,2026. Share your new ideas, best practices, lessons learned, agency initiatives, or project results with the wider flood warning community by submitting your abstract for inclusion in our conference program. Submissions will be accepted for 30-minute concurrent sessions (May 13-14) or 90-minute workshops (May 12).  The following tracks are available:

• Hazard Communications (social media, improved response, communicating risk, multi-hazard warnings)

• Advances in Meteorology (modeling, precipitation and weather forecasts, atmospheric rivers, seasonal and sub-seasonal forecasts)

• Hydrologic Forecasts and Modeling (rainfall-runoff, flooding, inundation mapping, reservoir operations, dams & levees)

• Extreme Events (precipitation, flash floods, riverine floods, post-wildfire, ice jam flooding, dam failures)

• Drought (warning, monitoring, communication, mitigation)

• Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Hydrologic Warnings

• Data Collection Technology (quality control, ALERT2, non-ALERT data acquisition, data analysis, water quality, operations and maintenance, best practices)

• Approaches for Funding Systems and Operations (federal resources, successes and challenges)

• Decision Support Systems (commercial of the shelf applications, custom sector-specific application, situational awareness, video applications, best practices)

• National Programs (NOAA, USGS, USACE, FEMA, USBR)

• Climate Change (precipitation changes, snowpack trends, water management impacts and mitigation, extreme event frequencies)

• Current Events (hurricanes, tropical storms, extreme events, riverine and coastal flooding)

• All presentations must focus on professional content and not include specific promotion of a product or company. Presentations will be delivered via USB drive at time of check-in at the registration desk.

Abstract submissions will be accepted until October 31, 2026.

The system allows only one abstract submission per email address. If you would like to submit an additional abstract, please email it to Alesia Za Gara at alesia@yources.com.

Although preparation of a complete paper is encouraged, it is not a requirement for a presentation at the conference. By submitting an abstract for a presentation or paper, authors agree to the distribution of the abstract and any subsequent presentation materials at the conference and to subsequent reproduction in conference proceedings, newsletters, and on the NHWC website.

The NHWC, with membership across the United States and around the world, is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting emergency and environmental management officials by providing expert advice on the use of real-time, high quality hydrologic information from automated remote data systems, with the goals of protecting lives, property, and the environment.
